Things I Like - Movies

Movies | TV | Books | Music

Alien

Alien

Ridley Scott | 1979

"I admire its purity. A survivor...unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality."

Sci-fi in its peak form. Timeless and iconic. What else do I even have to say?

The Blair Witch Project

The Blair Witch Project

Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sanchez | 1999

"It’s like a totally filtered reality. It’s like you can pretend everything’s not quite the way it is."

The first horror movie I really got into. Ahead of its time!!!

I wish more horror movies committed to the bit like Blair Witch did with its marketing/lore. I think the only thing I've seen like lately that was Longlegs.

Fallen Angels

Fallen Angels

Wong Kar-wai | 1995

"...tell her that 1818 is my lucky number."

This is one of those movies you watch and you're kind of lost the whole time but weeks later it backhands you across the face.

Hiroshima Mon Amour

Hiroshima Mon Amour

Alain Resnais | 1959

"I'm beginning to forget you. Forgetting so much love is terrifying."

Something they made me watch in film school that I thought was going to be super pretentious but unfortunately went crazy hard.

I'm not really a French New Wave stan but I'm willing to make an exception for this masterpiece.

I Saw the TV Glow

I Saw the TV Glow

Jane Schoenbrun | 2024

"This isn't normal. This isn't how life is supposed to feel."

Ohhh my godddd. Oh my god. I love an elevated creepypasta type beat and I'm such a sucker for horror as a vehicle. I had talk about this movie in therapy.

In the Mood for Love

In the Mood for Love

Wong Kar-wai | 2000

"I thought we wouldn't be like them. But I was wrong."

Who hurt Wong Kar-wai??? So fucking brutal.

This should be a household name, severely underrated outside of film circles.

The Last Unicorn

The Last Unicorn

Arthur Rankin Jr. & Jules Bass | 1982

"I was long ago, someone strange, / I was innocent and wise, and full of pain."

This was a staple of my childhood that I recently revisited. I guess I completely blacked out how absolutely devastating and moving this is. I also get weak for 80s animation.

Mulholland Drive

Mulholland Drive

David Lynch | 2001

"This is the girl."

So much more a feeling than it is something to put into words. You just had to be there. Sometimes I lie awake at night thinking about the thousands of possible different interpretations of this movie.

Adam Kesher is very iconic to me.

Nashville

Nashville

Robert Altman | 1975

"This isn't Dallas, it's Nashville! They can't do this to us here in Nashville!"

Here's another one you watch in film school that ends up haunting you years later.

One of the great ensemble films.

Onibaba

Onibaba

Kaneto Shindo | 1964

"I'm not a demon! I'm a human being!"

It's easy to fall into the trap of seeing how old a movie is and assuming how little it will affect you, especially when it comes to horror. This movie really withstood the test of time and I still get the heebie jeebies thinking about it.

Princess Mononoke

Princess Mononoke

Hayao Miyazaki | 1997

"I'm going to show you how to kill a god. A god of life and death."

This must have been how the Greeks felt reading The Odyssey for the first time.

A true epic, Miyazaki at his best.
